Emily Henderson’s Farmhouse Window Treatments

by Christen

Today we’re excited to share photos from one of our recent design projects with blogger, design influencer and stylist, Emily Henderson. We’ve been working with Emily for a decade, providing custom window treatments for many of her homes (LA, Mountain, Portland Project, etc.). We’ve also enjoyed helping decorate the windows of some of her design clients and staffers.

When we found out that Emily was planning to move back to Oregon (where Decorview is based), we jumped at the chance to work with her more closely on her Farmhouse windows.

Custom Drapery for Large Sliding Doors

When we first started working on the Farmhouse project, the living room wasn’t on our list of spaces for window treatments. Other rooms in the home were more of a priority because they required more privacy (like the primary bathroom) or room darkening (like the bedrooms).

But once Emily started spending more time in the living room, she realized that custom drapery would help finish off the space and provide a sense of coziness at night.

Decorview designer, Robin, helped Emily select a beautiful linen-like fabric in a soft neutral color. The subtle texture adds just the right amount of visual interest. Emily chose a very simple single pleat top, giving the panels just the right amount of structure without being too formal.

The black hardware matches all the other pops of black in the space, including nearby wall sconces and other decorative elements.

Fabric Roman Shade for a Porch Window

In addition to the sliding doors, we also designed a cordless Roman shade for the window that looks out to the front porch. The soft shade adds that perfect finishing touch and privacy when needed. The shade was fabricated using the same fabric as the drapery panels to add visual consistency in the space.

Contemporary Roman Shades & Custom Drapery for a Master Bedroom

For the primary bedroom, Emily originally planned to do just shades on the windows. However, when it came time to shoot her bedroom for the blog, she felt that custom drapery would push the room into that wow zone. The Contemporary Roman Shades she selected were fabricated in a lovely neutral color that picks up some of the warm tones in the wood windows. Unlike your typical Roman Shades, Contemporary Roman Shades have more structured folds offering a cleaner look at the window. When drawn, these shades darken the room for a good night’s sleep.

Fast forward a year, and Emily was ready to choose the drapery panels for her bedroom. For the curtains, Decorview designer Robin helped Emily find the perfect deep blue to match the blue color palette she eventually choose for the space. Tone-on-tone decorating (where you choose a single color for the walls, ceiling and trim) is a very popular trend right now, and selecting a blue fabric completed the harmonizing aesthetic.

Gold drapery hardware, rings and finials tied in the other gold elements in the room and elevated the look of the panels.

Soft Café Curtains for a Primary Bathroom

Emily’s primary bathroom and hallway feature some of the most unique windows in her home. These statement windows run from floor to ceiling, are incredibly wide, and feature the most stunning unobstructed views of the outdoors. The biggest concern in these spaces was privacy, however, Emily also didn’t want to diminish her view. After considering a wide range of window coverings, Decorview designer, Nancy, helped Emily design a completely unique café curtain for the windows.

Typically, café curtains are reserved for small kitchen or bathroom windows, however in Emily’s case, we custom designed and installed drapery panels to function like café curtains. The panels were installed midway within the window and brass hardware and rings allow the curtains to open and close depending on the desired level of privacy. The pleated top elevated the look of the panels and offered the right amount of tailoring and structure.

The resulting look is stunning – the panels and gold hardware give off a romantic and luxurious feel, while the linen fabric keeps the curtains from looking too formal.

Modern Top-Down, Bottom-Up Shades for a Kid’s Bedroom

For her son’s bedroom, Emily chose another modern-style Roman shade with Top-Down/Bottom-Up functionality. These room-darkening shades can be positioned anywhere within the window giving her kiddo lots of flexibility for light and privacy control.

The shades were fabricated in a soft blue for a fun pop of color and coordinated with the blue carpet in the room.
